Whats is NewsPicture:

News Picture is a tool, written 100% in Java, which allow you to automatically download contents of binary groups, mainly picture. Such a group is alt.binaries.pictures.fractals

Features:

• Select one ore more newsgroup to download
• View on-line thumbnail picture or full size picture.
• See ascii text associed with messages.
• Automatic downloading (command line interface -> can be run on crontab)

This tool will be Shareware.

Prerequesite: you must have Java1.1 or higher. See java.sun.com to download Java for your plateform.

Download the jar file:NewsPicture.zip (320kb) NewsPicture.zip in your destination directory (Note: Netscape4.0x users, press shift while right clicking on the NewsPicture.jar link)

then execute the following command jar xvf NewsPicture.zip
this must create three directory (ui, lineCmd,ini)
 
 

Then, in this directory, execute the command:

java ui.NewsPicture

For the command line interface, just type:

java lineCmd.NewsPicture
 
If you plan to use only command line interfance, it's preferably to configure news server and newsgroup using the user interface mode.
 

You first have to select your news server (usually news) and port number (by default it's 119, and this should not change).

Then select news group you want to retreive. First time you have to press the "Get all" button, to dwonload all newsgroup from the server.
The filter fields, at the top, is used to filter newsgroup name. Choosing binary, or picture is a good idea for such a filter!
